The five major basins of the Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario lakes, and their evolution in the youngest major interval of geologic time, the Quaternary, have been written about since the early 20th century. Papers for this volume were inspired from a symposium on Lake Agassiz held at the annual meeting of the Geological Association of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1982, and was finally compiled after a second syposium was held in London, Ontario, 1984, called the “Quaternary Evolution of the Great Lakes”. Some of the papers in this volume also appeared in Special Paper 26 – “Glacial Lake Agassiz”.
