Palaeontographica Canadiana No. 23: Microcosmodontid multituberculates (Allotheria, Mammalia) from the Paleocene and Late Cretaceous of western Canada.
Microcosmodontids are small multituberculates (Allotheria, Mammalia) from the Paleocene and latest Cretaceous of North America, previously known only from rare incomplete lower jaws with teeth and from isolated teeth. First described in 1930, microcosmodontids have usually been considered a subfamily of Eucosmodontidae. But fossils collected in Alberta since 1977 and described in this monograph indicate that microcosmodontids are best classified in their own family – the Microcosmodontidae.
One new genus, and two new species are established, and the interrelationships of the microcosmodontid species, and the Microcosmodontidae are discussed.
