Congratulations to the 2023 winners!

1st prize – Dan Stepner, University of Ottawa “7.5 cm-wide cluster of blue barite with calcite, from Lynn Road, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. These crystals are tenebrescent and change to deeper blue under sunlight.”

2nd prize – Mehdi Jouhari, Université Laval “A sheared ultramafic lens in the Ungava Orogen, Nunavik, Quebec, photographed using a drone.”

3rd prize – Kevin Sevalrud, University of Calgary “The granodioritic Snowpatch Spire on the eastern margin of the Bugaboo batholith in B.C., with the rapidly retreating Crescent Glacier in the foreground. The white area on the right side of the spire marks the location of a major rock fall event in December of 2022.”

Honourable mention – Jake Broders, Memorial University “Stratiform ironstones of the Lower Ordovician Wabana Group, Bell Island, Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Honourable mention – Gary (Sze Yui) Fung, McGill University “Aerial (drone) photograph of Neoproterozoic marine deltaic siliciclastic sedimentary rocks beneath the Green Point Lighthouse on the Port de Grave Peninsula, Newfoundland and Labrador.”

This year’s competition will be open to 2023 GAC® Student Members from

October 1st to December 15th, 2023.

Photo entries should showcase Canada’s varied scenery from a geological perspective or illustrate significant geological features (e.g. outcrops, fossils, thin sections, minerals), or showcase a human connection to geology.

Each Student Member may submit a total of 4 photo entries. These should be sent directly to gac@mun.ca with the subject line “Student Photo Competition”. Each photo should be labelled with your last name and a location, and the body of your email should contain a short description of each photo you are submitting. If you have any identifiable people in a photo you should obtain their permission before submitting the photo, and they will be contacted to sign an official photo release form should the photo be selected.

Winners will be informed by January 31st, 2024. All judges’ decisions are final.

Winning photographs will be showcased on GAC’s website and other promotional materials.

Prizes: 1st Prize – $500; 2nd Prize – $200; 3rd Prize – $100

Prizes are provided from the Jérôme H. Remick III Endowment Trust Fund

“Sedimentary stratification of the Red Deer River Valley, near Dorothy, Alberta.”

3rd Place – Jessi Steinke, Simon Fraser University

“Looking towards the Slims River (Ä’äy Chù) where the Kaskawulsh Glacier previously drained into Kluane Lake, Yukon.”
