The Eric Mountjoy Exchange Award is available to encourage the exchange of registered geoscience students or post-doctoral fellows between Quebec and other parts of Canada, and vice versa.
2022 Eric Mountjoy Exchange Award Winner
Muhammad Zahoor Iqbal (Ph.D. Candidate, Centre Eau Terre Environnement, Institut national de la recherche scientifique, Quebec)
“My thesis project at INRS-ETE is mainly focused on the investigation of the Mesoproterozoic polyphase tectonometamorphic evolution of the Central Grenville Province. I will unravel the tectonic events that affected different lithotectonic domains exposed at variable structural levels in the Mauricie area with modern in-situ petrochronology on monazite and/or xenotime to constrain the timing of metamorphism, and with phase equilibrium modeling to determine the pressure and temperature conditions attained during each metamorphic event. The Eric Mountjoy Exchange award will allow me to travel to the FiLTER laboratory at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan, to conduct laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses for U-Th-Pb petrochronology on monazite and/or xenotime. I will perform my analyses, learn to process the raw data and interpret my results over the course of two weeks. This exchange will provide me with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with LA-ICP-MS, be directly involved in data acquisition and processing, and therefore better understand the technical limitations of the approach.”
The deadline for National Medal nomination forms is January 5th, 2023
